OCEANSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS SPECIFICATION HUMAN RESOURCES-Classified PERFORMING ARTS TECHNICIAN DEFINITION Under general direction, to coordinate district and community use of the theater; to provide assistance to groups using the facility; to perform a variety of technical work in the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of theatrical equipment, including scenery, properties, lighting, and sound; and to guide and direct students. The working hours of this job classification are flexible. The incumbent may be assigned a work schedule that includes days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Coordinates district and community use of the theater.2. Maintains master schedule of performances, rehearsals, and other uses of the facility; keeps records of facility use.3. Supervises the use of equipment and materials.4. Provides technical assistance and supervision for all theater productions.5. Consults with facility users to determine technical requirements and appropriate level of district support for theater events.6. Ensures facility is set up for activities/performances and that appropriate district equipment and supplies are on hand.7. Operates a variety of technical theatrical systems, including sound, lighting, rigging, and audio; checks that systems are in good working order.8. Oversees the use of all equipment and materials during set up, run, and strike for all productions.9. Supervises theater students and student technicians in the safe operation and use of the theater, tools, and equipment.10. Maintains, or assists in maintaining, an inventory for all tools, equipment, and materials in the theater.Inventories, stores, receives, issues, and checks tools, lighting, equipment, costumes, lumber, makeup, hardware and paints; oversees use of hand and power tools; maintains inventory and cost control records of materials and equipment.11. Inventory, store, receive, issue, and check tools, lighting, sound cabinets, equipment, costumes, construction materials and supplies.12. Constructs, repairs, and operates theatrical lighting, sound, and scenic elements.13. Assists theater users in basic designing, implementing and supporting all technical needs in a production.14. Performs skilled electrical and carpentry work.15. Sets up theater equipment in accordance with user requests.16. Provides technical assistance and ensures proper operation of lighting, sound, and other equipment to facility users.17. Designs, coordinates, and participates in rigging, lighting, sound effects, stage carpentry, and set construction, as requested.18. Interacts with the performing arts department and provides assistance to instructional staff as needed.Provides technical assistance to the faculty and administration.19. Provides technical assistance and supervision at the facility when rented by off-campus groups; attends meetings with representatives of outside groups to plan and organize presentations and productions.20. Recommends stage equipment and materials purchases; requisitions items; maintains contact with theater supply firms; picks up equipment and supplies, when necessary. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 21. Performs other duties related to the position.Definition, Essential Job Functions and Other Job Functions revised by Board of Education: December 12, 2000 QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this classification would typically be acquired through graduation from a recognized two-year college with a major in instructional media technology, telecommunications, dramatic arts, or other related field; two years of responsible experience in theatrical production, including technical experience in light and sound direction or design, and the operation and maintenance of stage equipment and materials, or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
